  • ECABC = Advocacy!

ECABC is Your Voice. Since 1952 the Electrical Contractors Association of BC has represented the interests of electrical contractors and suppliers.

What does that mean? Advocacy! Here are just a few industry issues we have worked on in the past few months:

Prompt Payment Legislation: The United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. have enacted some form of prompt payment legislation. Canada has not. From 2007 to 2012 the average duration of a receivable in the construction industry has increased by over 13% from 62.8 days to 71.1 days. ECABC is working with trade associations across the country to reduce payment delays in federal construction projects!

BC Hydro: When BC Hydro switched to Regionally Optimized Contracts, ECABC stood up on behalf of our members to ensure the tender process was fair to all contractors, large or small. And when Hydro cancelled appointments on short notice costing our members lost wages and project delays, we pushed for better practices. And we continue to stand up for our members, directing our concerns to the BCH managers who are responsible!

BC Safety Authority: Project inspections ensure the safety of workers and guarantees that work is done right and up to code. When we noticed that the number of inspections was dropping below an acceptable level, we took BCSA to task. ECABC advocated for a change, demanding an increase in inspections and better accountability. We have seen an improvement, but we are still not satisfied. Our work here continues on behalf of our members!

Subcontract Issues: ECABC established a Subcontract Committee in 2010 to identify onerous clauses and help guide our members when entering into subcontracts. The committee consists of experienced electrical contractors, with the direction of our legal counsel helping contractors save time, money and unnecessary legal costs!

Committee Chair Robert Lashin talks about the Subcontract Program

Industry Partnerships: ECABC partners with other industry and trade associations to leverage better opportunities for our members. We are members of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA/USA) and Canadian Electrical Contractors Association (CECA). We are affiliated with The Electrical Joint Training Committee (EJTC) and are a founding partner of its subsidiary E2 Inc. Also - Western Jets, Industry Training Authority (ITA), BC Construction Association (BCCA), BC Safety Authority (BCSA), Mechanical Contractors Association of BC (MCABC), BC Construction Safety Alliance, (BCCSA), and British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) to mention a few. ECABC is a strong industry advocate for Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline. Women in Trades: The number of women in the electrical industry is growing each year, but still some barriers need to be broken. ECABC is helping to promote career opportunities and advancement for women and supports training and education for those interested in entering the electrical trade.

Supporting Communities: ECABC and our three chapters (Vancouver, Central BC and Vancouver Island) support local charities each year with our fund raising events and golf tournaments. Recently, donations have been made to The Greater Vancouver Food Bank, The Multiple Sclerosis Society, KidSport and The Rick Hansen Foundation.

Hundreds of hours are invested each year on behalf of electrical contractors defending rights and advocating to strengthen and promote our industry. ECABC President Deborah Cahill sits on numerous boards and committees ensuring we have a voice, including:

    Electrical Joint Training Committee
    Western Jets Committee
    Council of Construction Association (COCA)
BC Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA) Health & Safety Task Force
