ECABC Virtual Tech Talk: Load Management Without Service-Upgrade Pain
As EVs, heat pumps, and electric hot water systems rapidly increase residential demand, service upgrades are becoming a major bottleneck. This seminar explores when load management can realistically reduce service-upgrade pressure (and when it cannot).
Using real-world deployment examples, we will discuss practical whole-home coordination of flexible loads, clear role boundaries (contractor, engineer, utility), and key compliance considerations. The focus is on keeping installations conventional, responsibilities clear, and inspection risk low — while enabling safe, scalable electrification.

Instructor(s)
Dr. Martin Ordonez
Professor & Kaiser Chair, University of British Columbia | Founder & CEO, FUTURi Power
Dr. Martin Ordonez is a Professor and Kaiser Chair in Power Conversion and Sustainability at UBC, where he leads research on electrification, load management, and energy systems. His work focuses on practical solutions that support net-zero building electrification.
In addition to his academic role, he is the Founder and CEO of FUTURi Power, working to translate research into real-world electrical installations in collaboration with utilities, municipalities, and contractors.
Jeff Lueck
Supervisor of Electrical Inspections, City of Burnaby
Jeff Lueck is the Supervisor of Electrical Inspections for the City of Burnaby, where he oversees electrical code compliance and inspection practices across residential and commercial projects. With extensive field and regulatory experience, he works closely with contractors, engineers, and inspectors to ensure installations remain safe, conventional, and aligned with the Canadian Electrical Code. Jeff brings a practical municipal perspective on how load management and electrification technologies can be implemented while keeping inspection risk low and responsibilities clear.
Aaron Bennest
Electrical Section Manager, City of Surrey
Aaron Bennest is the Electrical Section Manager for the City of Surrey and serves as the local safety manager that oversees electrical inspections, plan review and permit issuance. He works with engineers, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure installations meet safety and regulatory standards across a rapidly growing urban environment. Aaron brings a practical municipal perspective on integrating emerging technologies, electrification, and load‑management strategies while maintaining clear responsibilities and minimizing inspection and operational risk.
