Join ECABC’s call for prompt payment

On Monday, May 6th, ECABC launched a campaign across its social media platforms to create awareness for the need for prompt payment laws in British Columbia, now.

Year after year, BC’s lack of prompt payment has been the #1 issue for ECABC’s contractors. Why? Because prompt payment ensures that contractors and subcontractors receive timely compensation for their work, allowing them to cover their expenses, pay their employees, and reinvest in their businesses.

ECABC’s members are not alone. We are joined in our advocacy efforts by many construction industry and labour organizations who also want BC to adopt prompt payment legislation now; prompt payment is the single most impactful item our government can implement to support the construction industry and workers, and BC has waited long enough. ECABC is calling on the provincial government to commit to prompt payment legislation this year.

Most of Canada has already adopted prompt payment legislation for construction projects. In most other provinces, the right to get paid for work done in a timely way is enshrined in law, and it has worked well. BC is an outlier, and our industry deserves the same protections as the rest of the country.

To get there, we need your help.

Get involved!

1. Learn about prompt payment
Many people outside the industry are unfamiliar with the problem of prompt payment. Getting paid on time is a matter of workplace fairness, not unlike minimum wage. Become familiar with the issue. Visit our prompt payment information page, watch our video and share why BC’s contractors are tired of being left on read.

2. Engage with the campaign
Unnecessarily delayed payments have a significant impact on the construction industry, workers and building costs. The financial viability of BC’s contracting businesses – and BC’s housing needs – depends on it.

Visit our social media platforms and engage with our prompt payment posts; the more people lend their voice, the more visible the issue will be. Find us on XLinkedIn and Facebook.

3. Share your story
ECABC’s leadership team regularly meets with representatives from our provincial government, and being able to share your experiences helps make this issue more personal for our elected representatives. The more we can show prompt payment’s benefits for real people, the greater our chances of success.

Contact our office (604-294-4123) or email ECABC’s President, Matt MacInnis, to talk through what it means to share your story.

We will continue to provide updates throughout this campaign, and until we receive a firm commitment from our government that prompt payment legislation will be enacted. As always, please reach out if the office can assist you in any way. We appreciate your support.
