ECABC’s Statement on PST Expansion Delay

Electrical Contractors Association of British Columbia President Matt MacInnis issued the following statement on the provincial government’s announcement that it is delaying its planned increase of the provincial sales tax to include designated professional services:

“Today’s announcement to pause the planned PST increase on professional services is a positive step for BC’s electrical construction sector, which would have faced increased costs that would have impacted bottom lines or been passed on to customers. The construction sector is facing enough challenges beyond its control right now. It was not the right time to impose added costs on an industry than employs a quarter million British Columbians and generates 10 per cent of the province’s GDP.

“The ongoing trade dispute continues to negatively impact BC’s construction sector, including new and increased tariffs on steel products, copper wire and electrical equipment among other important materials. BC should continue to focus on policies within its control to create a competitive economic environment that attracts investment and encourages job creation. Permanently cancelling the planned PST expansion would support business confidence.”
