Update on BC Prompt Payment Legislation
November 18, 2021

Thank you to all who attended our prompt payment legislation town halls. The feedback you provided to decision makers highlighting the impacts that a continued delay in prompt payment legislation has on your business was invaluable, and we believe the message was heard loud and clear.

I’d also like to thank Dan Leduc of Norton Rose Fulbright for attending and providing some of the information that ministry officials have now told us they have been looking for. We knew prompt payment legislation was making a difference in Ontario, but by having Dan there to explain to officials how and why exactly it is helping ensure contractors get paid on time is hopefully the missing piece officials need to move forward.

This week, the Select Standing Committee on Finance released their Report on the Budget 2022 Consultation and we’re pleased to let you know that the prioritization of prompt payment legislation is included in their list of recommendations to the Executive Council. While this is a positive sign, we will continue to apply pressure to get this over the finish line.

When we began this campaign, I don’t think any of us thought it was going to take this long to see better legislation in place, but the momentum that has been building after the recent weeks and months is leading to some positive developments. We are hopeful it’s only a matter of time before we have better protections in place for our contractors.

Sincerely,

Deborah Cahill
