#EVWeek in Canada sees investments in electric vehicle charging infrastructure

From July 11th to 15th, 2022, Canada commemorated #EVWeek with several announcements supporting electric vehicle infrastructure across Canada. We have compiled the most relevant updates for British Columbia.

“During #EVWeek alone, the Government of Canada announced the deployment of over 6,000 electric vehicle (EV) chargers across the country, supported by a total investment of over $45 million.

“Representatives led 10 specific announcements across provinces and territories, totalling over $16 million to install nearly 2,000 EV chargers across the country while raising public awareness about zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) and advancing green transportation initiatives.

“#EVWeek investments include:

  • “$3.95 million to Shell Canada to install 79 EV chargers across 37 retail locations along critical corridors in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan.
  • “$1.7 million to the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and the City of Burnaby to install 128 EV chargers in Burnaby, and across British Columbia.”

On July 13th, the federal Minister of Natural Resources “announced a combined investment of $1.7 million to two organizations to install a total of 128 EV chargers in British Columbia.” This investment has been divided into $1.2 million for the B.C. Ministry of Transportation to install 28 EV stations and $500,000 for the City of Burnaby to install 100 Level 2 EV chargers. Read more about this B.C.-based investment here.

Also on July 13th, the federal Minister of Tourism and Associate Minister of Finance “announced a $3.95 million investment in Shell Canada to install 79 EV chargers across 37 Shell retail locations along critical corridors between Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, with the majority of them remaining open 24/7.” B.C. will be adding $625,000 for servicing the stations in the province, as part of the CleanBC Go Electric Program.
