Skilled Trades Certification
June 1, 2023

SkilledTradesBC advances B.C.’s skilled trades system which includes implementing Skilled Trades Certification. This new mandatory certification system requires workers in the initial seven electrical and mechanical trades to become certified or register as an apprentice by December 1, 2023.

The change will formally recognize the skills of trades workers, raise the profile of skilled trades, attract more people to trades careers and help employers find the skilled workers they need to support their business growth.

Uncertified workers who have completed 1,800 – 5,400 hours of work-based training can challenge a level exam and start their apprenticeship journey at a suitable level. Experienced workers with more than 9,000 hours of work-based training can get certified by challenging a certification. To ensure high standards of training for apprentices, employers in STC trades will need to follow a two-to-one apprentice to journeyperson ratio.

A number of resources are available to support trades workers and businesses on their journey to Skilled Trades Certification. Visit SkilledTradesBC’s website for more information.
